THE HOTEL du LAC
Located on the ancient Roman decumanus, one of the two main axes of the ancient city, the Hôtel du Lac is a remarkable private mansion. Built in the 18th century, and heavily modified by its various owners until the mid-19th century, it was designed in the style of the upmarket Béziers homes: courtyard with stables, interior staircase of red marble from Caunes-Minervois, apartments on the ground floor and reception rooms on the first floor. In 1841, on the death of one of its owners, Baron Armand de Sénégra, the hotel was put up for sale. After several owners, the hotel was returned to Marie-Joseph du Lac, who then gave it to the city in 1974. Since 1982, various public services have been moved there. In the courtyard, an optical illusion fresco created by Dominique Montjoie in the 1980s represents the Biterrois sculptor Injalbert supervising one of his disciples sculpting an Apollo.
